Why Take it With You?

Thane Chiquinho Scarpa, a Brazilian billionaire, threw his hat into the ring of most eccentric billionaires in the world when he announced earlier this year that he would be burying his prize Flying Spur Bentley so that he would have it to enjoy in the afterlife.  The car itself is valued at over $1million.  You can imagine the outcry that Mr. Scarpa received from all parts of the world saying that there were many more beneficial and helpful things he could do with his prize Bentley; He could donate it to charity or auction it to raise money to help people in need.  Anything but bury a car that he may or may not be able to use once he had left this earth.  Media outlets from all over the globe condemned Mr. Scarpa for his action but he would not waiver from his intention.

I have never had the privilege of holding $1 million and I have never had the pleasure of driving a Bentley valued at over $1 million.  If you had the good fortune to obtain a Bentley, what would you do with it?  A luxury Bentley is not the type of car you dream to take on the German Autobahn or the Arizona Salt Flats to test its power and feel its speed?  A Bentley is more of a luxury to be seen and envied by those that have not had the financial fortune to be able to spend over $1 million dollars on a luxury vehicle but would you ever bury such an expensive machine?

If money was no object, I am sure more of us would test drive a Bentley and perhaps have them in our garage.  I doubt there would be a booming Bentley burial service, but you never know.  There are many eccentric wealthy individuals throughout history, many of whom have had the finances to do outrageous things, of which, most of us would never even dream.  Billionaires have always been questioned about their eccentric actions.  Leona Helmsley left $12 million to her dog to ensure that it continued to be the world’s most pampered pup even after she was gone.  Billionaire investor Nicolas Berggruen felt owned by his possessions so he sold over $2 billion worth of assets and now jumps from hotel suite to hotel suite and lives out of suitcases.  It’s not exactly the hobo lifestyle that has been depicted in American art since the turn of the century.  Is Mr. Scarpa another eccentric billionaire that has more money than sense?

With the help of a backhoe and with a shovel in hand, Scarpa buried his Flying Spur Bentley while the Brazilian media watched in dismay.  Upon completion of the burial Mr. Scarpa addressed the media stating:

People have condemned me for trying to bury a million dollar Bentley. The fact is, most people bury something a lot more valuable than my car. People bury hearts, livers, lungs, eyes, and kidneys. This is absurd. There are so many people out there waiting for a transplant and you will bury healthy organs that can save so many lives. This is the biggest waste in the world. My Bentley is worthless in comparison to life giving organs. There is no wealth more valuable than an organ, because there is nothing more valuable than life.

I officially announce I am an organ donor this week. I’m an organ donor, are you? Tell your family.

Mr. Scarpa had essentially buried a million dollar car to open eyes to the fact that we are losing valuable organs every day from people that are not registered organ donors when they pass.  One body can save up to 8 lives through organ donation.  ARE YOU AN ORGAN DONOR?  If you are not, you can register.  For more information click the link below.  You could save up to eight lives and BE THE GOOD.
